Dear Members & Friends of Europa Nostra, It is our great pleasure to invite you to attend Europa Nostra’s European Heritage Congress 2016 which will take place in Madrid from 22 to 27 May 2016.
As in previous years, the Congress will bring together hundreds of heritage players from all over Europe – professionals and volunteers, members of Europa Nostra and the European Heritage Alliance 3.3, partners from the wider fields of culture and economy, and representatives from various EU institutions and governmental networks.
Our Congress will offer you an inspiring platform for networking and the broadening of your horizons and also, hopefully, for forging new partnerships and friendships. As such, the Madrid Congress is a key event of Europa Nostra’s Network project ‘Mainstreaming Heritage’, which is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. It also benefits from the support of numerous public and private partners from Spain and Europe.
The Congress is being organised with the invaluable assistance of our country representation Hispania Nostra under the auspices of H.M. Queen Letizia of Spain. Set up in 1976 as a result of the Year of the European Architectural Heritage, Hispania Nostra has been a committed and very active member of Europa Nostra ever since. We warmly invite all members of Europa Nostra to celebrate Hispania Nostra’s 40th anniversary in Madrid!
Our Congress offers a rich programme of meetings, events and cultural visits. For the full and detailed programme, please visit www.europanostra.org/madrid
We shall start on 22 May with the meeting of the Europa Nostra Board and the parallel internal session of the Scientific Council. The Council Meeting and the public session of the Scientific Council will take place on 23 May at Espacio Bertelsmann. In the evening, there will be a Welcome Reception in honour of our Award Winners of 2016. On this occasion, Hispania Nostra will launch the Exhibition “Recognising Spanish Heritage in Europe”: a presentation of the winners of the European Heritage Awards from Spain between 1978 and 2016.
The European Heritage Awards Ceremony will be held on the evening of 24 May at the famous Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid. The Awards Ceremony will be co-hosted by Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, and the President of Europa Nostra, Maestro Plácido Domingo, who is looking forward to welcoming as many Europa Nostra members as possible to his native city Madrid. Some 1,000 persons are expected to attend the ceremony, including representatives of various EU Institutions and members of the corps diplomatique based in Madrid. The ceremony will be followed by a buffet reception at the Fine Arts Circle in close proximity to the Zarzuela Theatre.
The Awards Ceremony will be preceded by the Excellence Fair, a public event on the morning of 24 May, at the College of Architects of Madrid, during which presentations will be given by the laureates about their winning achievements.
On 25 May, Hispania Nostra organises, in cooperation with Europa Nostra, a full-day Forum on Social Participation in Heritage Protection, presenting examples from Spain and other European countries as well as from Latin America.
The Europa Nostra General Assembly will take place on the morning of 26 May following a session presenting the Forum conclusions from the previous day at the Conde Duque Cultural Centre.
The cultural programme features visits to some of the many heritage sites in the Spanish capital, including Madrid’s Metro Transport System – organised by Europa Nostra’s Industrial and Engineering Heritage Committee – and the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts of San Fernando on the afternoon of 26 May. The programme will conclude with a reception at the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid in that evening. On 27 May, you will be offered a unique post-congress excursion including visits of the Royal Palace and Gardens of La Granja and the stunning gem of Castile, Segovia.
We also urge you to spread the information about the Congress among your own network, since we also want to encourage the participation of non-members of Europa Nostra as part of our attempt to recruit new members and thus further enlarge and strengthen our pan-European network for cultural heritage.
We propose a selection of centrally located hotels in various price categories. We recommend staying in these hotels as they have offered a guaranteed numbers of rooms at special prices until the hotel booking deadline.
